Riley Horner’s story is a remarkable tale that highlights the fragile state of the human mind.
When a tragic accident led to a traumatic brain injury, Horner suddenly could no longer form memories.
But after extensive recovery, her brain began to recover, demonstrating the resilience of the human mind.
What Happened To Riley Horner?
By all accounts, Riley Horner was a typical teenager from Kirkwood, Illinois. She did well in school, participated in sports, and spent time with her friends.
Little did she know that in June of 2019, her entire life would be altered.
Riley was in Springfield, Illinois, attending a convention for the Future Farmers of America when tragedy struck. At the end of the convention, all the young participants gathered for a celebratory dance.
Video footage found on Instagram documenting the night captured the exact moment that Riley’s life would change forever.
In one particular video, you can see a young man crowd surfing, then suddenly dropping into the crowd. As he fell, he landed directly on Riley Horner, who fell to the ground and blacked out.
She was taken to the local hospital, and her parents quickly made the nearly 2.5-hour drive to check in on their daughter.
When they arrived, the doctor said that Riley was likely just suffering from a concussion and discharged her. But the Horner family did not even make it back to Kirkwood before realizing something was wrong.
Riley began having seizures in the backseat of the car, and her parents quickly detoured to another hospital.
After 4-5 seizures in the car and another 30-40 over the next few hours, it became clear that something more was wrong with Riley than a concussion.
However, doctors were unable to figure out what was wrong. CAT scans and MRIs came back with no sign of any damage to her brain.
With no distinct evidence, doctors continued to insist Riley simply had a concussion. It would explain many of Riley’s symptoms, like dizziness and headache. But it did not explain the worst symptom that became clear over the following days: memory loss.
Memory loss is common in victims of traumatic brain injuries. Anterograde amnesia, or the inability to form new memories, has even been the subject of famous films such as Momento and 50 First Dates.
However, Riley’s story was unique because of how often her memory would reset.
Like many movie characters, Riley continuously woke up believing it to be the same day: June 11, 2019, the day of her fateful accident. Then, her parents would have to inform her that days, weeks, or months had passed since that day.
Then, every two hours throughout the day, Riley’s memory would be completely gone.
This forced Riley to carry a notebook and pencil throughout the day so that she could take notes to remember. She was stuck in a two-hour loop, constantly relearning the same new reality she was stuck in.
The process was exhausting for Riley and those around her. Her parents worked hard to support their daughter, constantly reminding her of her condition. School became next to impossible, and Riley’s friends moved on without her.
It seemed inevitable that Riley would forever be trapped as a 16-year-old in an aging body, and nobody knew why.
A Medical Mystery: Searching For Answers
While Riley’s family worked to assist her, they recognized that it was an unsustainable lifestyle for everyone involved. Her parents continued to seek out new professionals who may be able to offer help.
While researching, they read conflicting reports about memory recovery. A common belief is that after six months, recovery is nearly impossible.
But the brain injury charity Headway has proven that recovery is still possible past this point, it is just more incremental and difficult. So, the family renewed their search for medical advice, hoping to beat the six-month mark.
The family began searching everywhere they could for a solution. Various neurologists, neuropsychologists, and other specialists investigated Riley’s case, with no solution to be found.
The best any doctor could do was recognize the signs of a concussion and offer standard solutions, none of which assisted Riley’s memory loss.
After four months of fruitless attempts, the Horner’s prayers were answered. The story of Riley’s condition went viral, attracting national attention.
The family received letters from across the country, with one from Utah standing out the most. A company called Cognitive FX claimed they could fix Riley’s memory.
A Cure For Riley Horner
The family packed their bags and traveled across the country in the hopes that Riley’s memory may finally be fixed. Dr. Mark Allen, a neuroscientist, became Riley’s doctor. Right away, he was able to identify what was happening with Riley’s brain.
Looking at her scans, Allen recognized that she demonstrated signs of a regular concussion.
What was unique, though, was that her brain had never recalibrated after the accident. Riley’s injury had fundamentally rewritten how her brain cells received oxygen.
Allen noted that the issue itself was minor and fixable, but that not addressing it could lead to severe problems. He set about developing a plan for Riley’s recovery.
Her cognitive rehabilitation was also unique, given her situation. She remained at Cognitive FX for two weeks, twice as long as most patients. During this time, she was subject to strenuous physical and mental tasks designed to recalibrate her brain.
154 days after Riley’s tragic accident, she was able to retain a new memory for the first time. Her mother asked her if she knew why she was in Utah one morning, and she responded, “for a doctor.”
By the end of the first week, Riley was able to create a handful of new memories, mostly related to food.
By the end of the second week, she was able to remember nearly everything. She was discharged with continued rehabilitation plans to continue her recovery, both mentally and physically.
The Horner’s refer to Cognitive FX as the “miracle in the mountains.” The doctors there gave Riley back her life, and the entire family feels indebted to them.
Raising Awareness: The Importance Of Brain Injury Research
Riley’s story highlights the complex and unpredictable nature of traumatic brain injuries and the uncertain nature of recovery.
While she was lucky that Cognitive FX was able to identify her issue and provide a recovery plan, it is clear that research on traumatic brain injuries needs to continue.
The Horners have become advocates for brain injury awareness, using the platform they gained during Riley’s period of memory loss to educate others.
They have shared their story, emphasizing the challenges of living with a traumatic brain injury, the importance of early intervention and diagnosis, and the need for comprehensive treatment.
The unique nature of Riley’s condition also attracted the attention of multiple media outlets, allowing the Horners to spread their message even further.
They have also taken advantage of the spotlight to raise funds to cover Riley’s recovery, which was nearly $10,000. Insurance would not cover the experimental treatment.
Riley herself has also sought to inspire others facing similar challenges. She is a beacon of hope for others suffering, proof that being resilient and determined can assist in getting through tough times.
The Road Ahead
Since returning home from Cognitive FX, Riley has continued to make progress in her recovery.
Riley still takes medication for her seizures and will likely never fully recover from her traumatic brain injury. But when her fate before Cognitive FX was seemingly to be trapped in a time loop for the rest of her life, some medication is a small price to pay.
Eventually, Riley hopes to get a job working at Cognitive FX. She had always desired to be a doctor, and with her life experiences, she decided to pursue a career as a neuroscientist.
Hopefully, she will be able to work alongside those who gave her back her life so they can continue to do the same for others.
Riley Horner’s story is one of persistence, resilience, and support. Waking up on the same morning every day and having to relearn that it has actually been months must have been exhausting.
Riley’s parents also dedicated their lives to assisting their daughter, ensuring she would not be lost, confused, or left behind by the world.
Together with Cognitive FX, they have woven an inspirational tale for anyone who is faced with a traumatic brain injury.
Recovery is not impossible, it is just a difficult journey that requires the right recovery plan, persistence, and community support.
