History is often remembered through triumphs and milestones, but some of its most powerful reminders come from photographs that capture its darkest moments.

These rare images reveal the hidden weight of tragedy, conflict, and human suffering—snapshots that confront us with the side of history many would rather forget. They are difficult to look at, yet impossible to ignore.

One of the final photos of “The Simpsons” co-creator Sam Simon. He was diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer in 2012 and given only three to six months to live. However, chemotherapy was able lengthen his life by a few years. Simon died on March 8, 2015.

Photo taken onboard Japan Airlines Flight 123 before crashing into a mountainside. Of the 524 people on the plane, 4 survived. The crash was attributed to a missing tail fin that was likely structurally weakened because of frequent landings and takeoffs.
